Lesson 16 26+27/08/2015 Using indicators to assess acids and bases
In this lesson we used a range of indicators to examine everyday household liquids to determine if they were acidic or basic. We summarized our findings in a table which can be found in the corresponding worksheets. We focused on planning out a practical including reading the methods, and making a plan for how we would conduct the experiment. Without organisation, laboratories are very difficult!

Lesson 17 28+31/08/2015 Acid Reactions 1
Lesson 18 31/8/2015 Combustion, combination and decomposition reactions
Lesson 19 1+2/09/2015 Neutralization reactions
In this lesson we covered neutralization reactions. you can find the associated material in your text book under chapter 5.5 and 5.10 (reaction of acids with bases).
Also look at the above link and watch the video to explore an interesting neutralization. |
lesson 20 Practical - BE a chemical detective
In this lesson we performed a group practical where students were given 5 unknown substances and were asked to develop a series of experiments which would identify them. This plan was then carried out. In the next lesson we discussed results

Lesson 21 and 22 Balancing chemical equations
In the final lessons for chemistry we explored one of the most important aspects of chemistry. The Law of conservation of mass and balancing equations. Antoine Lavoisier was the chemist who recognised that matter is not created or destroyed in chemical reactions, just rearranged into different kinds of substances. You need to revise activity 5.16 in order to practice balancing equations.
